What is a cannabis tincture?
Cannabis tincture is an alcohol-based concentrate, or simply an infusion of marijuana with alcohol.
All deadcannabinoidsand the terpenes are taken from the rest of the plant and mixed with alcohol.
This solvent is often used for cannabis extraction as it is excellent at separating the active ingredients from the rest of the plant material.
Tinctures are generally odorless, discreet, and great for travel.
Cannabis tinctures have beenused for centuriesfor medicinal purposes and were the most widely used form of cannabis before the prohibition of cannabis in the United States in the 1930s, which later led to the global banning of the plant.
It's hard to imagine that less than a century ago, cannabis tinctures were listed in the US Pharmacopeia and used across the country as a perfectly legitimate means of treating countless medical conditions.
It looks like cannabis tinctures are finally making a comeback...
Benefits of using a cannabis tincture
Using a cannabis tincture has many advantages over using other forms of cannabis, and it is not surprising that many consumers choose this type of product for cannabis consumption.
- Convenient and easy to use.– Consuming cannabis tinctures does not require any additional equipment or prior preparation (unlike smoking or vaping where you need to prepare asteam deviceor roll a joint). You can take tinctures with you and take them with you when you remember, even if you are in a hurry. They come in a bottle with a dropper so if you want to take your ownDose, you can just put a few drops under the tongue. As simple as that.
- discreet consumption– Many marijuana users are not comfortable with it.Smoking or vaping marijuanain public, mainly because of the smell that comes from this way of ingesting cannabis. On the other hand, cannabis tinctures are odorless and, in addition to sublingual use, you can consume them by adding a few drops to coffee or juice to get morediscreet consumption.
- The flexibility of use– Cannabis tinctures are an excellent ally in the preparation of other cannabis products, as they are often the basis of many food and candy recipes, or are added to juices, water and even bath bombs.
- quick start time– As already mentioned, tinctures are mainly used sublingually. When the tincture is applied under the tongue, the cannabis quickly enters the blood through the many capillaries and vessels in the mouth, and you will feel its effects very quickly. Because of this, cannabis tinctures have a faster onset time than cannabis edibles or capsules, which have to pass through the digestive tract before you can feel their effects.
- fine-tuning dosage– Cannabis tinctures allow users to better control their dose as the tinctures are applied drop by drop. Consumers can experiment with different strengths until they find what works best for them. This is not the case for some other cannabis-based products (eg edibles, capsules) which have predetermined doses of cannabis that cannot be changed for each use.
How do you use a cannabis tincture?
Cannabis tincture is usually consumed using a dropper, commonly known as a dropper.
Putting a few drops under your tongue will get you high in no time. Thanks to the veins under the tongue (part of the arterial system), cannabinoids quickly enter the bloodstream and producebrain effectsmatter of minutes.
Controlling the high (or medical cannabis dose) is also very easy with tinctures. If you feel you need a little more, add a few more drops.
Remember, it's always best to start small and scale as needed.

How do you make a cannabis tincture?
Cannabis tinctures can be made with alcohol, glycerin or coconut oil. There are great recipes floating around the internet.
Tinctures usually take a few weeks to make, but I opted for recipes that are fairly easy to make and don't take that long. If you have a botanical extractor like thisMagic Butter Machine, even better because it can make your job a lot easier.
First some important tips:
- Depending on what you want to achieve, you can always add more cannabis for a stronger tincture.
- When it comes to alcohol extractions, the stronger the alcohol, the stronger the tincture.
- The euphoria of THC-rich tinctures occurs very quickly after consumption and lasts for about three hours.
- You can make your ownCBD tincturethrough useCBD rich budsinstead of THC-rich buds.

To start
Green Dragon Recipe (Slow Method)
The process itself is quite simple, but it does take a while and requires shaking the pot every day.
This type of extraction requires a high percentage of alcohol as it is the best possible medium for infusing cannabis.
Is required:
- 30 g (approx. 1 oz) herb of your choice
- 1 qt (950 ml) distilled alcohol (Everclean or pure grain alcohol)
- Mason jar with lid
- grinder
- Glastropfer
- coffee filter or fuse
The address:
1. The first thing you need to do is crush anddecarboxyleneyour friends
2. Done that, put the herb and alcohol in the pot, close the cap well and store it in a dark closet.
3. Shake the contents of the bottle daily (or every other day) and repeat for at least 2 weeks.
4. Remove the dye crumbs with a coffee filter (or cheesecloth) until there is no more vegetable matter left in the liquid.
5. Pour the tincture into the dropper and store in the refrigerator.
Master Wu's Green Dragon Recipe (Fast Method)
This method is actually an improved Green Dragon recipe, very similar to the original but much faster.
For this you need:
- 30 g (approx. 1 oz) herb of your choice
- 1 qt (950 ml) distilled alcohol (Everclean or pure grain alcohol)
- Mason jar with lid
- deep pots
- grinder
- Glastropfer
- coffee filter or fuse
The address:
1. The beginning is exactly like the original recipe. Finely grind the buds, discard, mix the herb and alcohol in a jar and close the lid tightly.
Here is different:
2. "Boil" the cannabis/alcohol container in a deep pot of water for 20 minutes, keeping the temperature at 170°C.
3. Filter the plant matter from the mixture, pour into smaller glass containers or droppers and your cannabis tincture is ready to use!
Weed tincture (cold method)
For this one, you'll need very similar ingredients:
- 30 g (approx. 1 oz) herb of your choice
- 1 qt (950 ml) distilled alcohol (Everclean or pure grain alcohol)
- Mason jar with lid
- grinder
- Glastropfer
- coffee filter or fuse
The address:
1. The first steps are the same: grind, decarbonize, mix the herb with the alcohol in its bottle and cover it well.
2. The next step is different. Place the vial in the freezer for five days, shaking the contents once a day.
3. You don't have to worry about the glass breaking due to liquid expansion at low temperature because alcohol has a much lower freezing point compared to water.
4. Clean the mixture with coffee filters or cheesecloth and store in a dropper or other glass container.
Cannabis tincture with coconut oil
Although tinctures can be made with other oils, coconut oil has enough fatty acids to combine perfectly with cannabinoids. This recipe is a little tricky, but you don't need to decarbonize the herb first.
You will need:
- Pfanne
- coffee filter or fuse
- pitcher
- grinder
- A cup of coconut oil
- 3.5 g (0.12 oz) of cannabis
- glass container
- Grind your cannabis first, but skip the decarbonization process.
The address:
1. Combine the herb and coconut oil in a saucepan and transfer to a skillet. Place over medium heat for the next 6 to 8 hours. You can also add a little water if needed.
2. After that, just pour the oil into a container and store the tincture in the refrigerator.
Cannabis tincture with glycerin
You might be wondering if glycerin is safe for human consumption? Vegetable glycerin is probably part of your diet and you probably don't even know it, and it's usually ingested through cooking oils.
For this recipe you will need:
- a mason jar
- 7 g (0.25 oz) or 14 g (0.5 oz) hierba
- 470 ml (2 Bags) Bio-Glycerin
- grinder
- towels
- vase of plants
- coffee filter or fuse
The address:
1. Grind the herb into small pieces and then decarbonize it. Mix the herb and glycerin in a jar and close the lid. Make sure all plant matter is completely covered with glycerin.
2. Cover the bottom of the pot with a small towel and fill halfway with warm water. The towel protects the bottom of the glass from overheating.
3. Place the jar in a pot and cook over low heat for 24 hours. Keep an eye on the pan and shake it occasionally.
4. Remove the jar from the pan, let it cool for about an hour before straining the contents of the jar through cheesecloth.
5. Pour the mixture into a smaller container and you're ready to enjoy your tincture!
